NYC: Juneteenth rally at Rikers Island
NEW YORK (77WABC) — Interfaith leaders marched in the rain Monday urged Mayor Eric Adams to close Rikers Island.
Sixteen people have died in custody of New York City’s jails to date in 2022—matching last years totals—and on track to surpass last years deaths. A federal judge decides on a Rikers takeover next month.
Adams says he wants to keep the notorious jail under city control. It has been three years to the day since city council voted to close the chronically dangerous Rikers and replace it with a system of borough-based jails.
The Adams administration has doubled down on the plan, publishing a detailed website on the city’s plans to complete the transformation by April 2027, a year late.
