(77WABC) — The Washington Post has traced how many children have been exposed to gun violence during school hours dating back to the 1999 Columbine High School massacre.

In 2021 there were 42 — more than any other year since at least 1999. This year to date, there’ve been at least 24 acts of gun violence on K-12 campuses during the school day.

The Post’s count now stands at more than 311,000 children at 331 schools affected. 185 children and educators have been killed, and 369 were hurt.

The federal government does not track school shootings. The Post pieced together its numbers from news articles, open-source databases, law enforcement reports and calls to schools and police departments.
