During the offseason the Mets made some key offseason acquisitions with the signings of Starling Marte, Mark Canha, Eduardo Escobar and especially three time Cy Young award winner Max Scherzer. All of these players have provided the Mets with great veteran leadership and are part of the reason why the Mets are in first place right now. Another reason the Mets have improved this season is because of the hiring of Buck Showalter who previously managed for the Yankees, Diamondbacks, Rangers and Orioles. Showalter is a fiery competitor that gets the most out of his players, and in his short time with the Mets has shown why he’s been such a successful manager over the years.
The Mets pitching is a big reason why they have had so much success early in the season boasting a 3.20 team era. With Jacob deGROM out, Max Scherzer, Chris Bassitt, Carlos Carrasco, and Tylor Megill have all led the charge for the Mets. Max Scherzer has a 4-1 record with a 2.92 era and a 0.95 whip, While Chris Bassitt is 4-2 with a 2.49 era and a 0.95 whip. Carlos Carrasco, looking to have a bounce back season this year has looked good so far with a 3-1 record, a 3.19 era, and a whip of 1.01, while Tylor Megill has really improved this season boasting an era of 2.43, and a record of 4-1. The Mets have also been playing really smart baseball, and have been doing the little things right which was something they weren’t doing in previous years, and has contributed to their hot 21-10 start.
