WASHINGTON DC (77WABC) – Did Sen. Joe Manchin pull his proposal for a $1.8 trillion compromise to Build Back Better?

According to the Washington Post, the West Virginia Democrat did an about face, putting the death nail into President Biden’s signature social spending spree legislation.

The report cited three unnamed sources with knowledge of the matter and comes just days after Manchin told reporters during a press gaggle that he was no longer discussing Biden’s bill with the White House.

“I’m really not going to talk about Build Back Better anymore because I think I’ve been very clear on that,” Manchin said Tuesday to Capitol Hill reporters. “There is no negotiations going on at this time, OK?”

Manchin is also getting pressure from powerful corners of the Democratic Party to change his stance on the Senate filibuster to pass voting reforms.

In addition to regular talks with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, according to Politico, Manchin told colleagues that he’s also receiving calls from former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama as well as media mogul Oprah Winfrey.

They are lobbying him to vote in favor of removing the 60-vote Senate rule to pass major voting rights reforms with a simple majority. Manchin has said while he supports protecting voting rights, he is hesitant to change Senate rules.
