Brooklyn, NY (77WABC)-A 65-year-old man with seven prior arrests, largely for vehicular crimes, was shot and killed by highway patrol officers Thursday afternoon. NYPD Chief Rodney Harrison says the man exited his Jeep and “advanced toward the officers with a gun.” The Chief says the man refused “multiple” commands from police to drop his weapon. Officers fired several rounds hitting the man.
The man, whose name has not been released, died at a hospital after being shot in his leg by police officers near the Bay Parkway exit close to Cropsey Avenue in Gravesend Thursday afternoon around 4 pm.
Police say the series of events began when a highway patrol officer attempted to pull the man over for speeding. He backed up ramming the officers police cruiser. The officer gave chase and called for back up.
The officer and another highway unit caught up with the man near the Bay Parkway exit where the shooting took place.
