New York (77WABC) – Governor Andrew Cuomo held a press conference on Monday where he tried to clarify the CDC’s guidelines on mask wearing in schools, saying there is no mandate for kids who are outside on school grounds.
Cuomo explained that the rules for kids being outside in school need to align with the rules for kids in summer camp, adding that it doesn’t make sense to have different rules for both.
“How do you square those two regulations?” Cuomo said. “I don’t think you can, and that’s important because if people don’t think the rules are logical, then they’re not going to want to follow the rules. So we’re going to align them for schools outside. If you can go to camp and run around and play volleyball and not wear a mask in the playground in school, you can not wear a mask.”
Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker released a letter on Friday to the head of the CDC originally requesting updated guidance that would be determined on Monday. Â New York State Department of Education on Sunday rejected the idea to “afford the CDC an opportunity to respond to the letter,” which Cuomo further attempted to clarify.
Aside from the school mandate confusion, Governor Cuomo also stated that all mask mandates would be relaxed once the state reaches 70% vaccination.
#BREAKING: Most remaining COVID restrictions will be lifted when 70% of adult New Yorkers have received at least one dose of the COVID vaccine.
We’re only 1.4% away from hitting that goal.
Get vaccinated.

“When we hit 70%, then I feel comfortable saying to people of this state ‘We can relax virtually all restrictions’,” Cuomo said. “We’re at 68.6, almost there, but this isn’t horseshoes. We wanna be at 70%.”
