New York, NY (WABC-77)- It’s no secret that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been struggling since it was disclosed earlier this year, that out of 87 members, not one is a person of color.
NBC stated the rate of change the HFPA board has proposed because of the criticism over the their lack of diversity was not fast enough to warrant a show next year. Yikes- NBC reportedly pays $60mm for the rights to the Golden Globes; maybe the HPFA should have moved a little faster and worked a bit harder?
“Change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right,” the network statement read. “As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes.”
Actors like Tom Cruise and Scarlett Johansson are also taking a stand; Tom Cruise actually RETURNED his 3 Golden Globes just to prove a point. Johansson stated that she will not be participating in the awards until they put more substantial changes in place. She also stated that in the past, she has been subjected to sexist questions and remarks at the HFPA press conferences.
There has also been some buzz that Amazon Studios has discussed stepping away from participating in the Golden Globes as well. The 2022 Awards Season should be interesting to say the least!
