NBA: Philadelphia 76ers-Barkley Statue
NEW YORK (77 WABC) — They own the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Devils, and now Josh Harris and David Blitzer are interested in buying the New York Mets, according to multiple reports.
Variety was first to report the news on Monday and it was later confirmed by the New York Post and Newsday. The Mets would be the fourth major league franchise Harris and Blitzer would own, they also own Crystal Palace of the English Premier League along with the 76ers and Devils.
Harris is the co-founder of investment firm Apollo Global Management and Blitzer is an executive at private equity firm Blackstone. The two purchased the 76ers in 2011 and then bought the Devils two years later in 2013.
In February, a $2.4 billion deal for the Wilpons to sell the Mets to billionaire hedge fund manager Steve Cohen fell apart and since then the Wilpons have been looking for a new buyer. Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez have also expressed interest in purchasing the Mets.
