(Sacramento, California) – California Governor Gavin Newsom is facing backlash after accusing critics and election reform advocates of pushing policies he described as modern-day voter suppression ahead of the 2026 election cycle.

Newsom warned that efforts surrounding voter ID laws and election changes risk disproportionately impacting Black voters, comparing some proposals to “Jim Crow 2.0” tactics during recent remarks.

Supporters of the governor argue he is raising legitimate concerns about voting access and civil rights protections. Critics, however, accused Newsom of using racially charged rhetoric to attack opponents who support stricter election security measures.
