(Beijing, China) – Chinese President Xi Jinping is sending a striking message with President Trump in the room: China’s rise and Trump’s America First agenda do not have to collide.

Xi reportedly framed China’s national ambitions and Trump’s push to make America stronger as two goals that can move side by side, a major diplomatic signal during a high-stakes visit.

The remark matters because Washington and Beijing remain locked in competition over trade, technology, energy, military power and global influence. But Xi’s language suggests China wants to lower the temperature while still protecting its own interests.

For Trump, the moment gives him a valuable image: the leader of America’s biggest rival speaking respectfully about his agenda instead of dismissing it.

The real test will come after the pageantry ends. If China follows through on trade, energy and Iran-related commitments, Trump can call the trip a major win. If not, the warm words will be remembered as theater.
