(Beijing, China) – President Trump’s visit to China came with carefully staged symbolism, including a personal tour connected to Beijing’s historic Temple of Heaven.
The setting was not accidental. China uses ceremony to send messages, and giving Trump a high-profile welcome signaled that Xi Jinping sees the meeting as more than a routine diplomatic stop.
The optics matter for both leaders. Xi gets to show China as confident, historic and in control on the world stage. Trump gets to show American voters that foreign leaders are treating him as a serious power player.
The visit also comes with major expectations. Trade, Iran, energy, aviation and global security are all on the table as the two leaders try to manage competition without letting it spiral.
