(New York, NY) – The bodega cat is a beloved symbol of New York City’s delis and convenience stores. They serve a purr-pose too, beyond just being cute. Bodega cats hunt and kill little critters — like mice, roaches, and rats — making for an even better bodega experience.
The only issue is — they’re not explicitly legal.
Now, Councilmember Keith Powers plans to introduce a bill to allow cats in bodegas — because the cats currently violate health rules. The new law would allow them if they’re vaccinated, neutered, and registered. This would allow cats to continue fighting rats — and stay as part of the city’s culture. Mayor Adams hasn’t commented yet.
