What Do NYC Voters REALLY Want in a Mayor?

(Brooklyn, NY) – Inside Park Plaza Restaurant in Brooklyn Heights, locals gathered to discuss their hopes for the incoming New York City mayor, with the primary election just around the corner.

Eyewitness News was there to observe the chatter and politically-charged exchange of ideas and feelings. Many discussed the fact there is a need for improved policing and greater safety for public transit users. Others expressed concern about international issues, including the ongoing situation in Palestine, reflecting how global events continue to resonate locally. That was also notably before Iran and Israel started launching bombs at each other.

In the city, affordability remains the top priority for most voters. Zohran Mamdani’s proposal to freeze rent, offer free bus rides, and make the city more affordable has sparked significant interest and debate among residents. Andrew Cuomo, the former mayor, has been leading in many polls. Mayor Adams plans to run as an independent, and longtime 77 WABC host Curtis Sliwa is running unopposed in the Republican primary.

When it comes to criminal justice reform, many say it feels as though a lack of progress has been disappointing. While some hope for quick action, there’s an understanding that change doesn’t happen overnight.

This sense of urgency and hope is why a group of voters meet weekly at the diner to write postcards, encouraging people across the city to get out and vote.

Early voting began Saturday June 14 and runs through Sunday, June 22, with the primary election scheduled for Tuesday, June 24.
