(New York, NY) – Are members of Generation X really the “worst grandparents”? The debate is raging on social media. Many Millennials say Gen X grandparents aren’t as involved with their grandchildren as they’d like. Critics argue this shows selfishness or a lack of growth from past mistakes.
But Gen Xers are pushing back and say they were often neglected themselves – routinely tasked with babysitting young siblings – and even dealing with intense society-wide issues like the crack and AIDS epidemics. Many are now independent, freed up from the responsibilities associated with parenting, and they might not want to spend their later years caregiving.
From that perspective, some may say the disagreement stems from clashing expectations between generations, not a lack of love.
