(New York, NY) — The NTSB and FAA will begin today to try and figure out why a helicopter with six onboard, crashed into the Hudson near Jersey City Thursday afternoon, wiping out an entire family and the pilot. The family killed in the crash, three young children and their parents had just arrived here from Spain on a Big Apple vacation. The flight was a birthday present for one of the kids. Dozens of first responders rushed to the scene, but the impact of the crash was just too much.
The Prime Minister of Spain is speaking out, calling the crash an “unimaginable tragedy.”
For years, thousands who live on the Hudson have called on lawmakers to stop the tourists flights along the river. They fear one of those choppers could crash into a densely packed part of New York City or Jersey City. Helicopter accidents are rare. 25 people have been killed in New York City sightseeing helicopter accidents over the last four decades.
