(Amityville, NY) – A Long Island School District is rolling out a name change following a new state mandate. Amityville is no longer home to the warriors but the hawks as the school complies with new orders from Albany. New York State is requiring schools to retire any Native American logos and team names.
A few zip codes over in Massapequa, whose team name is the Chiefs, they’re urging President Trump to overturn the statewide ban after a judge dismissed their lawsuit. Other schools including Connetquot, Wantagh, and Wyandanch were also part of the lawsuit. All the schools say the team name and logo changes will cost between $200,000 and $1,000,000 to overhaul their official mascot. In Amityville, where they are already in the process of making the name change, students will vote on a new visual logo over the next few weeks.
