(New York, NY) – Numbers from the NYPD show crime is down compared to the month before. But looking at last year’s numbers tell a different story. Police Commissioner Tom Donlon says that crime in October had a steep decline especially in shootings, assaults and robberies.
However, experts point that looking at the data compared to the same month last year – assaults and rapes are actually on the rise. Felony assaults hit to their highest level in 25 years and rapes rose 17 percent compared to October 2023. Although, some other crimes have dropped this year. For instance, shootings, even though they have passed pre-pandemic levels, are down 7 percent compared to last year.
