(Bridgehampton, NY) — The last full-size Kmart store in the continental U.S. has closed its doors for good. Kmart No. 9423 was located in Bridgehampton, New York and shut down on Sunday. Neighbors say they are upset to see the store close, because they say it was one of the last places in the Hamptons that was affordable to all who live there. The next big discount box store is about 45 minutes away
The first Kmart opened in Michigan in 1962. It was one of the nation’s largest retailers through the 1980s. Economists say Kmart lost it’s way after Walmart and Target began to grow it’s stores across the U.S.
Kmart filed for bankruptcy in 2002. There are still two full sized Kmart stores in operation in Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
