(Brooklyn, NY) – Officials say that a fatal fire in Brighton Beach was caused by a lithium-ion battery. A 69 year-old man was killed and several others, including a firefighter, were left injured following the fire that broke out around 4 a.m. Monday morning.
Authorities say the man who passed away was charging his battery in his bedroom on the second floor when it burst into flames. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the FDNY, the device was bought online and was not certified. This comes as officials continue pushing for e-bike safety. Over the past year, there’s been over 170 fires linked to the batteries resulting in 59 injuries and three other deaths.
