(Hyannis, MA) — Ethel Kennedy is in the hospital after suffering a stroke last week. Family members say the 96-year-old widow of slain Senator Robert F. Kennedy likely had the stroke as she was sleeping last week. Kennedy’s grandson Joe Kennedy says his grandmother is getting the best care possible and is surrounded by family.
Ethel Kennedy is the mother to eleven children, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Her husband was assassinated in 1968 during his presidential campaign.
In the months after Robert F. Kennedy’s death, his widow Ethel opened a human rights center in his name. In 2014, President Obama gave her the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her work to advance human rights.
