(New York, NY) – As the nation and New York City pause to reflect on the 23rd anniversary of 9-11, at least one victim’s family member is blasting the White House. Joanne Barbara was one of the people that took part in the reading of the names in Lower Manhattan, where she stopped to note the elected officials in attendance were offering tribute and respect. But she also alluded to the concept of “doing 9-11,” calling it a “flippant remark.”
On September 11, 2001, Barbara’s husband died. FDNY Assistant Chief Gerard “Jerry” Barbara perished when the South Tower of the World Trade Center fell. He had served for 31 years in the department.
Earlier this week, when asked about his schedule, Biden said he would be “doing” 9-11 on Wednesday. That apparently didn’t sit well with Barbara. She also sharply criticized the White House and DOJ for pursuing a plea deal with the alleged masterminds behind the attack. That plea deal was later rescinded by US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.
President Biden was in attendance at the ceremony in New York City as was his Vice President Kamala Harris. Her opponent in the race for the White House, former President Trump, was also there.
