(New York, NY) – The French high-wire artist who walked across the Twin Towers 50 years ago is marking the anniversary of the historic feat in New York City this week. Philippe Petit astounded the city back on August 7, 1974 when he strutted and danced across a tightrope that he and his friends had unlawfully rigged between the towers.
Petit, who turns 75 next week, is taking to the wire at St. John the Divine on the Upper West Side Wednesday and Thursday evening. Various artists will also take part in 19 short scenes conceived and directed by Petit and friend and musician Sting will perform new music. Petit is a longtime artist in residence at St. John the Divine, where the ashes of his daughter, who died at age 9, are interred there.
