(New York, New York) – City Hall is implementing a new policy to keep swimmers safe, even after-hours. It requires some lifeguards stay at the beach past 6PM when a heat advisory is in effect. City officials say about 66 lifeguards will remain on call at beaches from 6-8pm to assist first responders with emergencies.
Mayor Eric Adams stressed that swimming will still not be allowed after 6pm. Under the new protocol, lifeguards will stay near their stations for the extra two hours to help responses in case of an emergency. New York City beaches have seen a number of drownings after-hours this summer.
