(New York, NY) — Mayor Adams is issuing an Emergency Order to suspend parts of the city’s new solitary confinement law. The emergency order comes just a day before the law was to take effect. Mayor Adams cited concerns for the safety of staff and other detainees, and staffing issues. The order suspends aspects of the new law that would have set a four-hour limit on how long prisoners could be kept in solitary confinement. In a statement, Adams said “It is of the utmost importance to protect the health and safety of all persons in the custody of the Department of Correction and of all officers who work in the City jails” Adams had vetoed the city council’s approval of the bill, but the council overruled the veto in January.
