(New York, New York) – 14th Street has been the scene of widespread illegal vending and violence as of late including a deadly triple stabbing in June, incidents like this are causing a major shift in focus for the NYPD. The NYPD says they’re going to start cracking down on crime in the East Village. They have installed new security features such as cameras to keep the streets safe and have even added more officers on patrol to the neighborhood.
After weeks of violent crime taking over the neighborhood Mayor Eric Adams called on the NYPD to implement a plan to deal with the crime directly. Another approach is a collaborative project between two police precincts. For the first time, officers in the 9th and 13th Precincts will be working together in the area rather than ignoring what’s happening one street over because it’s not their district.
The shift comes following continuous incidents including stabbings and consecutive shootings in Tompkins Square Park.
