(New York, NY) – A woman is facing charges after an infant was found early this morning with its umbilical cord still attached. The child was naked and crying when the doorman grabbing food came across the baby screaming for help.
First responders were on the scene and evaluated the baby boy who was then taken to Bellevue Hospital. Reports say that he is in stable condition, expected to be ok.
The hospital that they brought the child to is actually the same site where the mother checked herself in after delivering the baby. 37 year old Ayatta Swann checked into Bellevue and did not answer questions the staff had about the baby. Once the baby arrived, healthcare workers were able to connect the dots. Swann was charged with the abandonment of a child. State law does allow people to legally and anonymously give up a newborn, as long as they are left at a safe space like a hospital or staffed fire station.
