(Bronx, NY) – The NYPD is investigating the death of a recruit who collapsed during training exercises on Wednesday morning. It happened at the department’s training facility in the Bronx. The deceased recruit has since been identified as 33-year-old Edgar Ordonez. Tragically, he was just days away from graduating and joining the force.
By late afternoon on the day of his passing, it wasn’t clear if Ordonez’ death was connected to the high heat and humidity currently impacting the New York area. It’s also not clear what exercises he was doing at the training facility. Reports say Ordonez became lightheaded, eventually collapsed, and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The New York City Medical Examiner’s office will perform an inquiry and autopsy to determine the official cause of death. NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban is asking city residents to keep the Ordonez family in their prayers.
