Former NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg has donated over $17 billion to charity throughout his lifetime, and education is one of his foundation's areas of focus.

(Baltimore, MD) – Bloomberg Philanthropies, the charitable organization founded by former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, has just gifted a massive amount of money to Johns Hopkins University. And it means the majority of the university’s medical students will no longer have to pay tuition.
Bloomberg, who graduated from the Baltimore school in 1964 with a degree in electrical engineering, has given over $17 billion to charity throughout his lifetime. Education is one of the areas his Bloomberg Philanthropies focuses on. And this gift of $1 billion means medicals students from families making less than $300,000 per year will not pay tuition — beginning this fall.
In addition, families making less than $175,000 annually will have their living expenses covered by Johns Hopkins University. University President Ronald Daniels says nearly two-thirds of current and entering medical students will qualify immediately. “We’re quite excited about the impact that this will have on increasing access to health-related professions at Johns Hopkins,” Daniels said.
The $1 billion donation will not only go toward student tuition at the medical school, but also additional financial aid for the university’s graduate students.
