(New York, NY) — A new sexually transmitted fungus has been found in the U.S. for the first time and the case is in New York City. The patient, a man in his thirties, developed a rash on his private parts, buttocks and legs after having sex with men during trips to Greece and the UK. Dermatologist Avrom Caplan of NYU Grossman School of Medicine co-authored the case study and said it’s the latest in a series of highly contagious ringworm cases seen in Europe but until now never in the U.S. It’s not deadly but the rash can last for months before clearing up and Dr. Caplan says it can cause permanent scarring.
