(New York, NY) – *UPDATE as of 9:01AM* – **Commuters can now take the Queens-bound side of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway after repairs were completed ahead of schedule. Crews finished concrete and steel reinforcement work a full day early, ahead of the Monday reopening. The City Department of Transportation made the announcement on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that the workers wrapped up the repairs early and thanked drivers for their patience.**
Traffic and transit officials are reminding commuters to beware of closures on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway this weekend. The city Department of Transportation says that the Queens-bound side of the expressway is closed until 4 a.m. Monday morning. Detours will be posted encouraging drivers to work around the route.
NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said the work is the “third and final phase” of interim repair work for the year. Workers are reinforcing concrete and steel bars to extend the lifespan of the highway.
The city is still aiming for a complete overhaul of the roadway, with plans that were released last year showing potentially more lanes complimented with a greenery area. DOT officials hope to get that project started in 2028, however it’s unclear where the funding will come from since a request to the Federal Highway Administration was denied earlier in the year.
