(New York, NY) — Some city beaches have no lifeguards on this opening weekend of the swim season.  The city is yet again trying to find enough lifeguards for the summer season. The “New York Post” reports the city’s Parks and Recreation Department only has 230 lifeguards, well short of the six-hundred needed to work its beaches. Parks Department Commissioner Sue Donohue is urging swimmers to only go in the water where lifeguards are on duty and present. .

The good news is that more than five-hundred lifeguards-to-be are currently undergoing the 16-week training program. City Hall is modifying some of the lifeguard qualifications. Mayor Adams says applicants for kiddie pools will no longer will be timed for the 300-yard swim. He says applicants will still go through rigorous training and must be able to swim those 300 yards.
