(Santa Fe, NM) – A judge has denied a motion from actor Alec Baldwin in an attempt to dismiss the involuntary manslaughter case against him. The actor was indicted on two charges, involuntary manslaughter and negligent use of a firearm in relation to the death of “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in 2021.
According to court documents, the judge rejected two arguments from Baldwin’s legal team. The defense claims that prosecutors skirted the normal proceedings and rules of the grand jury to take attention away from evidence and witnesses that could potentially clear the charges against the actor.
The on-set armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, that managed the firearms, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for involuntary manslaughter.
Prosecutors claim that once the gun was in the hands of Baldwin, he held responsibility. He was not present at the hearing since he waived all pre-trial appearances. That trial is set to begin in July.
