(New York, NY) — The New York City Health Department says Mpox cases are climbing again. There have been at least 36 cases of the virus, also known as “monkeypox” each month since October. Health officials also have their eye on a more severe strain of the illness that has surfaced in the Congo. They worry that it could spread in New York City.

New York City had an Mpox outbreak back in 2022. The Health Department used a massive vaccination campaign, along with extensive community outreach, to end it. Over 100-thousand New Yorkers rolled up their sleeves for the shot. More than 38-hundred cases of Mpox were reported between May 2022 and December 2022. There were two deaths.

Health officials say symptoms begin with rash or sores that look like blisters or pimples. It can be very itchy and painful. Flu symptoms can follow. Most of the cases in New York have been found in the gay community.
