Biden Signs Foreign Aid/Anti-TikTok Bill into Law

President Biden signed a bill into effect Wednesday, April 24, 2024 that will send $95 billion in foreign aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. The same legislation also requires that TikTok parent company Bytedance sell its assets in the US -- or the social media app could face an outright ban.

(Washington, D.C.) — President Biden signed a huge foreign aid bill into law on Wednesday. On Tuesday, the Senate passed the 95-billion-dollar emergency foreign aid package, which includes billions of dollars for Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan, and the Indo-Pacific. Biden praised the Senate’s vote to help out struggling nations that are U.S. allies.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says Republican opposition to helping Ukraine in its war with Russia started with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. McConnell says Carlson convinced many rank-and-file Republicans that providing military assistance to Ukraine in its war against Russia was a mistake. He says Carlson ended up where he should have been all along, “interviewing Vladimir Putin.” The final passage of the legislation comes after months of stalemate and division among Republicans.

The Senate foreign aid bill also could lead to a ban on the social media app TikTok. The bill could force TikTok’s China-based parent company ByteDance to sell the app or face a ban from U.S. devices and networks. Lawmakers say the Chinese are using TikTok to spy on Americans and create division among voters.
