(New York, NY) — Columbia University’s president, Minouche Shafik will testify before Congress today about the treatment of Jewish students on it’s campus. Columbia has been attacked by some for not protecting Jewish students from angry pro-Palestinian protestors since the October Hamas attack on Israel. Shafik sent an email out today, ahead of her testimony saying her immediate responsibility is to ensure the physical safety and security of the entire Columbia community. She says Antisemitism and calls for genocide have no place at a university.
Antisemitic incidents in New York State are soaring to record levels. The Anti-Defamation League says there were more than twelve-hundred reports of assault, harassment and vandalism targeting Jewish people in 2023, a surge of 110-percent. That’s the highest number ever recorded by the ADL in the state and more than double the previous record reached in 2022. Around two-thirds of the incidents happened after the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7.
