(Albany, NY) – After a lengthy and drawn-out process, Governor Kathy Hochul announced lawmakers have reached a budget deal for New York’s 2025 fiscal year. She had moved the deadline back from April 1 while negotiations continued. One of the biggest sticking points had been the state’s housing laws, and how to handle evictions.
Governor Hochul says the spending plan includes additional funding for what she and others have called a “housing crisis” in New York. Meanwhile, amid the ongoing migrant crisis, funding will be put toward that as well.
Amid the various line items, funding will be placed toward protecting tenants’ rights — with squatters taking over properties making headlines. The spending plan also sets aside funds for cracking down on illegal cannabis shops. Hochul notes the budget will including funding that aims to help prosecute domestic abusers, as well.
