(New York, NY) — Score one for the porch pirates in New York. City Hall says too many packages are being stolen from New Yorkers, so they are setting up free public lockers on sidewalks, where packages can be delivered and safely picked up. Mayor Adams says around 90-thousand packages are reported stolen everyday across the five boroughs. In response, the city has begun a pilot program that will see the lockers set up in easy to access locations. They’re free to use 24 hours a day, and can be managed online.
The “Locker NYC” pilot program also aims to cut down on emissions by reducing the number of delivery trucks on narrow streets by centralizing delivery locations. The lockers are being tested out now in parts of Queens and Brooklyn.
