(Baltimore, MD) — Crews began removing some of the wreckage of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge from Baltimore harbor over the weekend. Maryland Governor Wes Moore warns the clean up will be complex, and that it will be a long while until the harbor reopens again. He says the Baltimore port closure will impact industries all across the nation. Baltimore harbor is one of the most active ports in the nation.

The 22 men aboard the container ship that slammed into the bridge’s support beam last Tuesday, are still on the oversized vessel today. It’s unclear when it will be safe to bring the men back to shore. The owner of the ship says they have plenty of food and water, so it’s just a waiting game until it’s safe for crews to go in and get them.

President Biden will visit Baltimore this week to meet with state and local officials involved in recovery efforts. Biden has pledged full federal support following last week’s early morning disaster when a cargo ship struck a support pillar on the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Six construction workers on the bridge at the time were killed. Two of the bodies have been recovered. The largest crane on the East Coast is on the scene to assist in clearing debris from the shipping channel.
