(New York, NY) – It’s now been over a year since Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was arrested and detained in Russia on charges of espionage. Amid the Russia-Ukraine war, Gershkovich had reportedly been investigating a site of military importance when he was arrested. The Kremlin has accused him of being a spy and has extended his pre-trial detention several times.
A graduate of Princeton High School in New Jersey, Gershkovich’s parents are of Russian descent. On Friday, the Wall Street Journal left their front page blank and included a headline that said: “His Story Should Be Here.”
US officials say they’re continuing to try and secure Gershkovich’s release. They argue allegations of espionage are “baseless” and President Biden released a statement that reads Gershkovich risked his personal safety to “shine the light of truth on Russia’s brutal aggression against Ukraine.” Biden also accused Russian leadership of trying to “use Americans as bargaining chips.”
