(New York, NY) — A new study finds that one in four New York City children live in poverty. The study from Columbia University and Robin Hood, a poverty-fighting organization, shows that more than 1-point-5 million adults and nearly 420-thousand children lived in poverty in 2022. The report defines poverty as not being able to afford basic needs like housing and food.
The end of pandemic-era policies, like stimulus payments and the Child Tax Credit expansion, is said to be a major factor. Black, Latino and Asian New Yorkers are twice as likely to struggle with paying for basic needs compared to white residents. The Bronx had the highest level of poverty.
Robin Hood CEO Richard Buery says the break-even to survive in New York City is around 88-thousand-dollars a year for a family of four. He says even at 88-thousand-dollars a year, families will be forced to make choices about paying bills or for groceries.
