(Moscow, Russia) — Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny died behind bars on Friday. The Russian prison system says he collapsed and lost consciousness after taking a walk. Prison medics were unsuccessful in reviving him. The 47-year-old Russian activist was serving a long jail term. He was known by Russians for lampooning the people around President Vladimir Putin, calling them crooks and thieves. He also spoke publicly for years about corruption inside the Kremlin. He reportedly survived several poisoning attempts.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak says Navalny’s death is “terrible news”, calling him a huge and brave advocate for Russian democracy. Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky says it was “obvious” Vladimir Putin was directly behind Navalny’s death.
