Bronx food pantry is out of food

(New York, NY) — The leaders of a Bronx food pantry say they have bare shelves today, and are extremely worried about how they will continue to feed the hungry in their neighborhood. The Albanian American Open Hand Association, which is located in Pelham Parkway, says it feeds around 1,600 neighbors a week, but donations that keep them afloat have dried up.  The pantry has been in the neighborhood for more than a decade. Hungry New Yorkers continue to show up at the pantry looking for help, only to be turned away.

The private-owned pantry does not receive state or city funding.  Bronx Congressman Ritchie Torres is asking New Yorkers to pitch in and help out. He says he just wired the pantry five thousand dollars.
