(New York, NY) – As we move past Christmas, millions of New Yorkers now have to figure out how to get rid of their trees. One option is Mulchfest — the annual event that allows residents to bring their tree to designated spots around the city where the crews will chip the tree and hand you a bag of fresh mulch.

The recycled trees will also be used to provide mulch for trees and flower beds across the Big Apple. Chipping weekend is officially Saturday January 6 and Sunday January 7. Last year, over 58,000 trees were recycled. The New York City Parks Department has more info on Mulchfest at their website.

Meanwhile, getting rid of your tree on the curb is permitted beginning January 5th, and continuing through Saturday January 13th. Those pickups differ from trash collection, so the tree may not be taken from the curb the next day. Also, residents in Brooklyn and Queens can put their tree out on compost recycling day, if they are included within that program.

Getting rid of an artificial tree is permitted, but make sure you separate out the metal base and trunk — and then put those with recycling. The National Christmas Tree Association estimates 25 to 30 million trees are sold each year.
