George Santos makes his last stand

syndication-usa-today-151

Oct 13, 2023; Washington, DC, USA; Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., tells the U.S. Capitol Police about an altercation he allegedly experienced with a protestor outside of ra GOP caucus meeting working to formally elect a new speaker of the House on Oct. 13, 2023. Syndication: USA TODAY

(Washington, D.C.) — Long Island Congressman George Santos says he know he will likely be expelled from Congress by the end of the week.  The Republican is facing an expulsion vote after being accused of spending campaign cash on clothes, spa treatments and porn. Republicans say they have enough votes to take down one of their own. Santos could become just the sixth member of the House to ever be removed by his colleagues.

Santos responded to the expulsion resolutions by taking to the House floor and asking colleagues to understand what kind of precedent it would set for him to be removed before federal charges against him are resolved. He made clear he would not be resigning beforehand. Santos has survived two prior expulsion votes. But a report released by the House Ethics Committee following a months long investigation has prompted new outrage. The report released Nov. 16 was unsparing in its criticism, concluding that Santos “sought to fraudulently exploit every aspect of his House candidacy for his own personal financial profit.”
