(Washington, D.C.) — The U.S. hit two facilities in eastern Syria used by Iran, in what it says are “self-defense strikes.” Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin says that at President Biden’s direction, the strikes were carried out as a response to a series of attacks on U.S. personnel in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-backed militia groups. A statement from Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin says the U.S. “does not seek conflict” and does not intend to engage further. The strikes were carried out at facilities used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
