(New York, NY) – After being converted into an all-electric, modern office building, the Domino Sugar Factory is reopening in Brooklyn. Located along the East River waterfront in Williamsburg, the 460,000 square foot brick building is now known as “The Refinery at Domino.”

In 2007 the city designated the location as a landmark. It first opened in 1882 to serve as a sugar refinery. Decades worth of molasses covered the floors before the building was renovated, making it smell like sugar. Two Trees Management handled the project. The exteriors of the factory, located along Kent Avenue, have been preserved.

In a press release, Two Trees Management said, “along with Practice for Architecture and Urbanism, the team expertly created a glass building within the historic brick facade building, with a large-scale living landscape lining the interior that intimately connects people inside to the surrounding natural elements and greenery outside.”
