Italian food festival
(New York, NY) – The eleven-day San Gennaro festival kicked off today in Little Italy. Officially the Feast of San Gennaro, it first began when immigrants from Naples wanted to celebrate Saint Gennaro, their patron saint. Italian delicacies like pizza and meatballs are prominently featured, as well as sausage and peppers sandwiches. Of course, zeppoles are a longtime favorite as well — the deep-fried balls of dough topped with powdered sugar — similar to the funnel cakes sold along Jersey Shore boardwalks.
This is the 97th Feast of San Gennaro. It runs through September 24.
