Today, 77 WABC is celebrating Pride Day 2023, as part of Pride Month. This recognizes the LGBTQ+ community’s struggle for equal rights and representation, especially the now-successful fight for marriage equality. As part of the celebration, special guests will be featured on 77 WABC’s airwaves throughout the day.
Pride Month comes from the larger Pride movement, which can trace its roots in many ways back to New York City. While the homosexual and transgender community has been active and vibrant throughout the US for many decades, numerous advocates and historians point to the so-called Stonewall Uprising as a major event. It was during the early hours of June 28, 1969 when a gay club in Greenwich Village was raided by cops. The ensuing riot that resulted along Christopher Street, where the Stonewall Inn is located, served as a catalyst. From that point forward, an increasing number of Americans grew to accept the LGBTQ+ community, paving the way for federal marriage equality in 2015, via the Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court case.
And, for the first time, a new poll from Gallup shows a majority (52%) of people across the world now say their area is a good place for gay or lesbian people to live. In 2006, when Gallup started asking the question, just 21% said their neighborhood was a good place for gay people to live.
