cell phones through years
(New York, NY) – Today marks the 50th anniversary of the first-ever cell phone call. Motorola employee Marty Cooper was in San Diego, and he called one of his rivals at AT&T, based in New York City.
In the decades that followed, cell phone use has become ubiquitous. In fact, a new study from computer software company Sinch finds close to 72% of respondents can’t imagine going an entire weekend without their phone. Close to a quarter say they could only last an hour tops. Four in 10 say they’d rather give up the gym. Among millennials, 25% would rather give up TV. Two in every 10 Generation Z respondents would rather give up sex than their cell phone.
Back in 1973, the first cell phone weighed two and a half pounds, and it had a 20 minute battery. Ten years later, when they were released to the public, cell phones cost $3,900 – which is the equivalent of $12,000 in today’s dollars.
