(New York, NY) – A week ago tonight, New Jersey Councilwoman Eunice Dwumfour was shot dead at the age of 30. As authorities continue to hunt for her murderer, many are wondering about a potential motive, and how authorities are conducting the investigation.

We asked Bo Dietl, retired NYPD detective and host of WABC’s True Crime podcast, for his theory on the case.

To date, investigators don’t seem to have made tangible progress while looking for the killer. In fact, as we get further away from her shocking assassination, it seems there are more questions than answers.

The latest development in the case surrounds newly released surveillance camera footage, obtained by News 12 New Jersey. While the footage is blurry and likely didn’t give cops a ton to work with, authorities believe the man pictured murdered Dwumfour. It was on Wednesday, February 1 when she was shot dead while driving her SUV, outside her Sayreville apartment complex.

Dwumfour, a Newark native and William Paterson University graduate, won her seat in Sayreville in 2021. Reports indicate it was an upset win for the Republican. Immediately following her death last week, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy was speaking during his regular appearance on WNYC, and opted to comment on Dwumfour’s murder. He said the attack doesn’t appear to be politically motivated, something that caught the attention of Insider NJ’s Bob Hennelly. The longtime reporter notes New Jersey has a poor history of investigating crimes with a political connection, such as the unsolved murders of Joyce Sheridan and her husband John Sheridan – also a Republican.

Hennelly’s article intimates it’s irresponsible for New Jersey’s top elected official to weigh in on a potential motive, given the investigation is ongoing. There’s a number of things outside of Dwumfour’s political history that have spawned questions and intrigue in the wake of her murder. Recently married, the councilwoman’s husband wished her a posthumous happy birthday late last week – even though her birthday was still around a month away. Dwumfour’s family is of Nigerian descent, and her husband reportedly lives in the African country where he runs a church. The late councilwoman also leaves behind a 12-year-old daughter, who family members say is from a previous relationship.
